Swedish Massage

Swedish physiologist, Per Henrik Ling in the early 1800’s, pioneered Swedish massage. Beginning with massage oil being applied to your skin, various massage strokes go toward the heart with light to moderate pressure. With a Swedish massage your muscles are warmed and worked to increase the flow of blood and lymph through the soft tissues of the body to relieve tension and pain, and to break up knots. This, also, helps remove lactic acid which reduces stiffness. This massage is recommended for people who have never had a massage before, or have them infrequently. In some cases deep pressure can also be applied during the Swedish massage. However, if the client has specific problem areas such as shoulder, or back, etc. he/she may want to schedule a Deep Tissue massage therapy session.

Deep Tissue

An offspring of Swedish massage, deep tissue massage is more targeted at the deeper areas of the muscles and uses many of the same techniques and movements as Swedish massage, but with a more intense pressure. It is administered to affect the sub-layer of muscle and fascia, and is especially helpful for chronically tense areas. Deep tissue massage may be more uncomfortable than a Swedish massage, but should not cause pain.

You will want to drink plenty of water after your massage, to flush out waste that was released. The day after your deep tissue massage, you may have soreness, because of the waste – but this should pass in the 24 hours following.

Before you massage starts, tell your therapist about areas of tension and any areas of pain, so they can tailor your personal massage. This massage is not recommended for those new to massage or having infrequent massages. This is intended for relief of stubborn knots or areas of chronic tension.

There are many forms of “deep tissue” therapy. Many use deep pressure. One particular deep tissue technique uses minimal or very light touch. Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique (SMRT) is used consistently at HealthyFocus.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy

Cranio-Sacral Therapy is a gentle non-invasive manipulative technique enabling self-correction in the craniosacral system. Seldom does the therapist apply pressure that exceeds five grams or the equivalent weight of a nickel. When there is an imbalance in the craniosacral system, the brain and spinal cord suffer. Without those organs functioning well, the senses, emotions, and motor functions are not capable of working as effectively. (from The Therapeutic Value of the Craniosacral System by John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M.)

Clients remain fully clothed during this therapy session.

Cranial Massage

Cranial Massage is a massage therapy that is focused on the occipital region of the head/neck and the scalp muscles of the head.

Because of the connections of the muscles and nerves of the body to the spine. neck, and head – this massage therapy can benefit and relax the rest of the body as well. The client is either comfortably relaxing in a zero gravity chair or on the massage table.

The client is fully clothed during this therapy – unless the full neck is also included in the massage therapy session. In which case, the client’s upper body only is disrobed and fully draped with a sheet except for the area being worked on for the neck massage therapy.

Oil is used only if the neck massage is included.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage, most beneficial in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, soothes nerves, relieves strain on your back and increases blood flow to both the mother and the baby. By stimulating different glands in your body, a prenatal massage helps stabilize hormones as well. The therapist will take extra care in making sure your body is supported throughout the entire massage. During the massage you will be positioned on your sides, and briefly on your back, with pillows to support you. The focus of the therapist is to nurture and support and soothe.

Lymphatic Massage

Lymph is a thick, clear fluid that circulates through the lymphatic vessels and carries white blood cells to fight infection and disease. Lymph itself comes from tissue fluids and originates as blood plasma. The lymphatic system is a vital part of our immune system. Since the front of the body is where the majority of the lymph nodes are located, the client is lying supine (on the back, and face up.) Because many of the lymph vessels, nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system,  are just under the skin – moving the lymph requires very light touch of the therapist’s hands and pads of fingers, barely the weight of a teaspoon of water. Thus, the massage is much slower and lighter than most other massage therapies. This increases the circulation and causes the lymphatic network to enlarge – important because this then assists in draining away some of the body’s waste and toxins while reinforcing the immune system.

Proper Hydration is very important. After the Lymphatic Massage the client might not feel any effects immediately when compared to a relaxation massage. Sometime later in the day, or in the evening a feeling of tiredness or heaviness might be felt. This is simply a sign that the body is using its energy to eliminate all the extra toxins that have been added to the circulatory system due to the increased lymph flow. Drinking water helps your body flush out the unhealthy chemicals, toxins, and wastes that may cause that tiredness, or even susceptibility to illness. Also, staying away from caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes and heavy foods to allow your body to complete this process of elimination is important, especially through the following day or two.

Clients should not schedule a Lymphatic Massage if they have a fever, of course, but can schedule one at nearly all other times.

Clients often schedule Lymphatic Massage to assist detox efforts, and sometimes to begin a weight loss program, or in conjunction as a reward for weight loss goals met.

Reflexology

Reflexology, developed in the early 1900’s, is based on the body being divided into zones running from the head to the toes, with reflex points in the feet, hands and head. These reflex points are related to different organs and glands in the body and by stimulating these points benefits can be felt throughout the entire body. Several techniques will be used to stimulate the reflex points in the hands and feet. Client is fully clothed for this therapy except for hands and arms for hand reflexology and feet and lower legs for feet reflexology.

Reflexology at HealthyFocus also includes a River Rock Foot Soak – so relaxing – as Hand Reflexology is applied, and/or before Foot Reflexology is applied.

Basalt Hot Stone Massage

The Basalt Hot Stone* massage begins with the therapist gently stretching you, and performing Swedish massage. Then stones will be placed on your body’s key energy channels. The therapist uses heated, smooth stones as an extension of her hands. Moderate pressure is used to release tension, and open energetic pathways, promoting intense relaxation. The heat relaxes and warms up the muscle so the therapist can work deeper without too much pressure.

*Connie Yust, CMT has been trained at Body and Soul Therapeutic Massage Center and School in Basalt Hot Stone Massage Therapy.
